What visa are you on?

This is a question I ask fellow expats on a regular basis.

It is funny you meet a new Aussie expat and you ask the following:

Where are you from?
How long have been in the USA for?

Then the question:

What visa type are you on?

It is not a question I ever ask to fellow friends in Australia. But I regularly get asked and ask the same question of them.

USA is one of the hardest countries to obtain a visa. I have been on three types of visa- J1, E3 and currently a L2.

Expats live with and arrange visas on a regular basis. So it is for this reason it is discussed on a daily basis.

It is one of those things that you need to arrange, in order to live and work in the USA.

So why is it that we ask others there visa status? It is like asking them if they are married? Where do you live in the Bay Area? or What do you do not work?

Is it because we are intrigued? Is it a a way of bonding together as expats?

Food for thought.

So next time you meet a fellow Aussie expat is this going to be in your top 3 questions?
