Do you have a nickname?

Sassy
Mrs Stoney
Sar
Bear
Sas
Sarie
Stoney
Clarkey
Connie

These were my nicknames growing up and in recent times. It came to my attention today that nicknames are not as common in the USA.

An Aussie gives another Aussie a nickname as a sign of endearment. A sign to say we are mates.

I call:

Mum-Mummy
Dad- Daddy
Brother- Bro
Elisa- Elis
Rebecca- Bec
Michael- Hubby or Mickey
Lucinda- Lu Lu
Kami- Kam Kam
Janine- Ja
Mark- Yogie
Chris- Macca

To name a few. Some are logical while others not so much.

I remember I was in year 4 and I was late for school, Mum dropped me off and walked me to class. She gave me a hug goodbye and said ” Bye Sassy, have a great day” Then everyone laughed.

That was the start on my nickname. Hubby calls me Sarie, Mum & Dad calls me Sar, Sas or Sassy, Bro calls me Bear and my friends call me Sar.

I am happy to go by anything! But what I realized is being a expat you constantly are meeting new people and they call me Sarah. It feels strange when they call me that. It is my name, but it makes me feel like I am in trouble or something. When in actual fact that is my name. Sarah.

So I guess the upshot is I like being called by my nicknames and like giving nicknames to other.

Food for thought. What will tomorrow bring I ask myself!
