One of the biggest differences/ challenges I face being a expat in the USA is working in an American workplace. The workplace is very different to that of a workplace in Australia. Though the countries seem similar on the surface doesn’t mean they approach business in the same way.

Top 5 difference between workplaces:

1. Dress code– In Australia there is a tendency to have more of a business casual approach to work dress code, where as in the USA it is suit focused.

2. Holiday benefits– USA has 2 weeks holidays, where as Australia has 4 weeks,

3. Time management– Work tasks and approval take a lot longer in the USA. This could be due to more approval levels required to proceed.

4. Face time– refers to in person contact with bosses and co-workers. Millions Americas work at least one day a month at home or lives interstate from there office. There is a focus in the workplace to be present in person in the office regularly and travel to the head office often.

5. Cultural difference– Company hierarchy are very different in the USA. This could be due to the size of the companies and that companies have multiple subsidiaries. Some companies have 4 Vice Presidents while other have 30 Vice Presidents,

Have you seen the show The Office?

Sometimes I feel the USA is just like that. You learn to adapt and understand the culture. Also to keep in mind each company workplace is different and the above suggestions are generalised and not specific to one workplace.

Regardless of where you live or what you do. Embrace the workplace you are in, learn the differences and work them to your advantage.
