How to make new friends on your expat journey

2 Oct

Making girlfriends, is like dating! You meet someone, you click, get there contact details, want to catch up for coffee or dinner, then you get the guts to ask them out and then you meet up.

Some people you have stuff in common with and click, while others not so much. The art of making friends is putting yourself out there. Making the effort to meet people.

A fellow reader asked me how do I make new friends in a new place? So that inspired me to write this post.

The top 3 ways to make new friends:

Network– network events, expat events are great ways to make friends. Most people who attend don’t know anyone or maybe one person and are looking to make new friends.

Hobbie groups– what ever your hobbie, take the time to get to know other people in the group. You already have a hobbie in common, that is a solid foundation for a friendship.

Meet up groups-expat, running, business, girlfriends, there is every different type of meet up group. There is a group for everyone. Go online and find out what groups are in your area or even start your own group.

Top 4 way to make a stranger a friend

Put your self out there– make the effort to do new things, attend events and put yourself our there

Exchange details– say you made a friend, got along great and then left the event. If you don’t get there details you won’t be able to catch up again. So be daring and get there details. Email or phone doesn’t matter. I normally find an upcoming event I want to attend and so do they and get info so we can organize it.

Make plans– find events to attend, organize dinner, go to a concert. Make plans. Take the initiative to be the one to make the plans.

Attend events– it is Friday night and the last thing, after working all week, is to attend a expat network event where you won’t know anyone. Trust me I know the feeling, I have done it.. Best piece of advise is do it! Make the effort as it will be worth your while.

Try all of the above you may meet your new best friend or just have an experience which is a good story to tell.

“Some people come into our lives and quickly go. Others stay a while, make footprints on our hearts and we are never, ever the same”
